So I heard back from Shadow Mountain on my submission for March of the Necromancer. They have unfortunately said no, but on the plus side I get to go out and pitch the story to more people to hopefully get someone to pick it up. For those of you who have wondered why I haven’t just self published it, there are two reasonable answers to that.
- I don’t have the funds to put into that kind of a project to get a good cover for the book and to market it. Nowadays self publishing is a lot of marketing and paying for your ads to show up in places like Facebook, Amazon, Apple or Google. Yes I could still make my own cover like I did with Muldrix, and yes, I can just post it and see what sales I get, but most places won’t advertise or show off my book if it’s only making a few sales compared to some others that are out there. This also leads me to my second point.
- YA fiction is a harder sell. Yes people read it and enjoy the YA genre, but unless they are willing to trust a new author it’s going to be hard to sell to anyone. This is why I was hoping to go Traditional with my publishing as a publisher can back the book with their own following since their audience will trust them that the book is a good one if they are the ones publishing it. I don’t have those kinds of street creds right now so having a publisher would really help me out.
Hopefully those are reasonable answers as to why I won’t self publish right now. I have had this conversation with many others and I will look into this option for my other stories as I do have plans for many other Epic Fantasy novels.
I am still planning on writing Muldrix (I know, I know. I have been saying that a lot but I have figured out what is wrong with the story and I am going to try and fix it) so please be patient. Much of writing involves back tracking and fixing mistakes along the way and I only had a general idea what I wanted to have happen in that story line. Now that I know and know what I need to do to make my current story work I will have to go in and add a few extra chapters.
But this will all have to wait until I’m done with NaNoWriMo. I am taking 2 months to try and write about 50,000-70,000 words on my next project and even then that won’t be the whole story. If I can get to about 70,000 words then hopefully I can write the other half in another 2-3 months. Once I’ve done that I can then self-edit and compile the books together and then from there I can have people Alpha read and Beta read the book. This is all assuming that I can write roughly 140,000 words in 4-5 months. It could happen, but we will see how life plays out.
Speaking of life, my Birthday is this October 17th, so yay!
See you all next month.
